WHAT IS ROOTS AND BOOKS?
Who are we?
We are a student-led nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to English literacy for individuals of all ages who lack educational resources.
Our mission statement:
Our mission is to provide free, accessible English literacy instruction to underserved children and adults, with inclusive support for individuals with learning deficits, empowering them with the reading skills needed for academic, professional, and personal success.
Our problem statement:
Many children and adults in underserved communities face significant barriers to developing English literacy skills due to limited access to educational resources, qualified instruction, and individualized support. These challenges are often intensified for individuals with learning deficits, who may require alternative teaching strategies, additional time, or personalized instruction that traditional classrooms are unable to provide. As a result, these learners frequently fall behind their peers and are overlooked by systems designed to serve the average student.
Without early and consistent literacy support, individuals from low-income backgrounds and those with learning deficits experience long-term academic struggles, reduced employment opportunities, and limited ability to navigate daily life independently. Existing literacy programs are often costly, inaccessible, or narrowly focused on one age group, leaving many children, teens, and adults without the support they need. This gap in accessible, inclusive literacy education perpetuates educational inequality and prevents individuals from reaching their full potential.
